Awesome shot of a flyby over the carrier at 2:33! So much good extra footage that wasn't included in John Ford's documentary. I've got to try and get a high quality transfer of that carrier flyby. Hopefully these film for are available for download on the national archives sight.

My Great Granddaddy volunteered to serve in the Navy early 1942. He was part of one of the first batches of Seabees, and served in the Pacific from 1942-1946. He left the Navy as a Petty Officer 2nd Class. Out of 7 brothers, 5 served during WWII, 4 in the Navy, 1 in the Army. The other 2 served in the Army, 1 of those died in the first UN Counter offensive during the Korean War, the other served in the late 50's. We also have several other veterans who have served all the way back to the American Revolution, up to 2 of us who are Global War On Terrorism Era, myself (Army), and a cousin who served with the Coast Guard. Proud Heritage!

Yup, you dont need to be in the blast for an explosion to kill you. Just close proximity can rupture your organs and do all kinds of nasty things to your squishy inards. And explosions underwater are worse, so sitting in an iron tube a few yards from the explosion they just set off probably killed the crew right off and then they drifted out and sank

Kind of basic accept the sugar part, seemed a lot. I like to make the egg batter savory to compliment the sweet of maple syrup w/butter. So I add whipping cream, olive oil, mustard, parm cheese, dill weed, salt/pepper, onion powder and garlic powder, basil, cinnamon. I whip between bread dips otherwise some spices float etc. Kick it up a notch as they say. Try it. With the onion pwdr it smells good cooking, gets people up in morning.

Both of my grandfathers served in the 1940s. Never met them but still look for their faces in every video I see. I hope and wish that they know how much I love & cherish them and thank them what they did, that they’re my heroes. They both luckily came home but passed before I was born. I’m in my mid 30s now.. I can’t watch this and not cry. I yearn to hug them. Meet them. Hear their voice. Know them as men. Maybe in Valhalla one day. All of our boys are warriors. ❤️🤍💙😢 John Desmond Clark and Roland Paradis. Both are from Maine. 🇺🇸

Reading all the comments after I stumbled across it after I saw the video posted on Instagram marking the 79th anniversary of this attack. I’ve seen this video many times over the years. I never knew it was April 12, 1945. There are two significant things that happened on that date. 1. FDR died. 2. A kamikaze attack struck my dad’s ship USS Tennessee. I never realized this video was the Tennessee. Dad told me on this day that a kamikaze flew over his head and struck the other side of the ship. He talked about it flying over his head (he was a 20 mm gunner) and striking the other side of the ship.

I served from 1965 until retirement in 1985. We were issued the White Hat (its official name). I thought then (and I still do) that it was a dumb looking hat. I would have much rather worn a white flat hat. Al least back then we could personalize them a bit, but now it appears as though the Navy has cracked down on that. In every picture I see, the sides are straight and the hat is perched on top of the sailor's head. This makes it look even worse. And I think the US Navy is the only navy in world today that doesn't have a flat hat, at least for dress occasions.

My son and I learned about Don Walsh and the Trieste through a David attenborough documentary about the Mariana trench. Ever since then my son (just turned 6) has wanted to see the Trieste in the naval museum and meet Don Walsh. He is fascinated by the whole expedition. He wants to ask him about the fish he saw at the bottom. I kept telling him sure thats a fine idea maybe we can even write to him. Well just recently I learned that Mr. Walsh passed away last year. I don't have the heart to tell my son. I like to think that one day in the far off future, when I am gone myself, he will finally meet Mr. Walsh and get to and ask about that fish. RIP Don Walsh, may God keep you.
